The updated Prekindergarten Guidelines state, “The goal of emergent literacy instruction in prekindergarten is not to teach children to read connected text or even whole words, but rather to teach the building blocks that will, in later grades, provide children the foundation needed to become proficient readers and writers.” Equipping educators with the information and tools needed to allow their pre-k students to be successful future readers will involve a vast array of materials and experiences that each child can partake in the classroom. In this all day session, participants will learn about teaching literacy, phonological awareness and alphabet knowledge in the pre-k classroom.
