School psychologists understand the biological, cultural, developmental, and social influences on mental and behavioral health, behavioral and emotional impacts on learning, and evidence-based strategies to promote social–emotional functioning. School psychologists, in collaboration with others, design, implement, and evaluate services that promote resilience and positive behavior, support socialization and adaptive skills, and enhance mental and behavioral health.

SESSION DESCRIPTION: School psychologists are qualified mental and behavioral health providers and are trained to provide direct services to students, which can include individual and group counseling. Frequently, this counseling is provided in the context of Special Education. This presentation will focus on the multiple aspects of providing counseling as a related service. Topics addressed will include: evaluation, goal formulation, progress monitoring, techniques and strategies, all in the context of ethical and legal considerations. 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  • Participants will review the process for conducting effective evaluations to determine the appropriateness of counseling as a related service.
  • Participants will practice creating counseling goals derived from assessment data.
  • Participants will identify and reflect upon the legal, ethical and best practices issues related to providing counseling as a related service.
There are two price tiers for this event 1. Region 10 public local education agencies receive free registration. 2. Out of Region and/or Private/Non-Profit entities pay $75.00.
