An Introduction to the Art of Interpreting
Community Interpreting: Dual Role

An Introduction to the Art of Interpreting will equip participants with a broader understanding of how to work as an interpreter in a school setting. The training focuses on essential interpreting foundations while delivering specific applications for interpreters within public school and special education contexts. This interactive training is designed for bilingual individuals working in dual roles in school settings—as an interpreter and in a primary employment role—but is also highly applicable to all school staff involved in special education/ARD meetings or who interact with emergent English populations.

Included in the training:

  • Interpreting basics
  • Best practices for facilitating interpreted sessions and the roles an interpreter may assume
  • Industry-specific discussion of interpreting in special education settings
  • History and legal precedence for special education in the US as related to limited English proficiency
  • Structure and timeline of the Admission Review and Dismissal (ARD) process in Texas, and a review of technical terminology.
  • Direct application of skills through discussion, pair or group work, and role play.

Important Session Information:
