This is a two-part session with a break in between. Part 1 will be Syllable Types and Part 2 will be Orthographic Mapping.
Syllable Types: If we were to divide each word in the English language into syllables, we would be able to categorize these syllables into six types. In this session, participants will explore the six common syllable types and the “odd” syllables that don’t quite fit. Teaching syllable types can help young readers and writers build a deeper understanding of phonics. Becoming aware of the placement of the vowel within a syllable can help to unlock the “code” of our English language. Participants in this session will learn instructional strategies for explicitly and systematically teaching each syllable type.
Orthographic Mapping: In this session, participants will gain insight into how children build words into their sight word memory. Printed word recognition depends on fast, accurate orthographic mapping. According to Louisa Moats, orthographic mapping is the mental process used to store words for immediate and effortless retrieval. It requires phonemic awareness, letter-sound knowledge, and the mechanism for sight word learning. We will explore ways to incorporate orthographic mapping into their daily phonics instruction.
This session will meet in the Rowlett High School Library.
