Many are familiar with intergenerational dissonance or conflict that exists between parents and children. However, when it comes to the conflict that exists over culture between parents and children, practitioners are a little less familiar with this unique dynamic. Acculturation is a complex and unique process, and it deeply impacts the family system especially when youth are involved and are going through that process simultaneously as their parents.
This workshop will use the culture wheel as a self-reflection activity and guide as we move through the enculturation and acculturation process. We will discuss some of the tools that we can equip our families with to help ease conflict such as conflict resolution techniques, empathetic listening, and self-soothing techniques. The hope is that as parents and children learn to better understand each other and give each other space to figure out their acculturation process, the more the conflict lessens and the more they experience closeness.
