In reader-response, the reader actively engages a text and makes meaning from it by examining, explaining, or defending a reaction to a text, which strengthens the reading-writing relationship. Getting students “in dialogue” with a text through a reading response can prepare them for increased analytical thinking and improved constructed responses. In this session, participants will gain an understanding of how reading responses align to the anticipated STAAR/EOC redesign (both short constructed responses and extended constructed responses) as well as AP English exams and college-ready exams like the ACT, SAT, and TSIA2. Participants will learn strategies to create text-based questions and help facilitate students’ abilities to compose written responses which appropriately utilize a given text and demonstrate college-ready reading & writing.
