Mental and Behavioral Health Services and Interventions
Special Education Counseling As A Related Service

Domain 4Mental and Behavioral Health Services and Interventions

School psychologists understand the biological, cultural, developmental, and social influences on mental and behavioral health, behavioral and emotional impacts on learning, and evidence-based strategies to promote social–emotional functioning. School psychologists, in collaboration with others, design, implement, and evaluate services that promote resilience and positive behavior, support socialization and adaptive skills, and enhance mental and behavioral health.

Important Session Information:

Special Education Counseling is possibly the most impactful practice in school psychology, but many LSSPs report feeling under or unprepared to provide the service appropriately. This session will provide a basic foundation for Counseling Evaluation and Eligibility considerations.

In this session, participants will:

  • Review legal and ethical guidelines for counseling as a related service

  • Identify practices for identification and determination of eligibility for services.

  • Recognize what factors to consider for reevaluation and consideration of termination of services.

The content of this session is designed to address the Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists (TSBEP) professional development requirements outlined in 461.11(a).

PLEASE NOTE: Per Board Rule 461.11(b), the TSBEP board does not pre-approve content as meeting professional development requirements. Determinations about whether or not specific professional development meets board requirements is at the sole discretion of the Board. For additional information, please review the Acts and Rules of the Board 461.11 – Professional Development, or contact the TSBEP directly.

This session is free to all Region 10 member LEA staff.
