Close and Scaffolded Reading in the K-2 Classroom

In this synchronous virtual learning experience via Zoom, participants will explore the use of close and scaffolded reading in the kindergarten, first and second grade classrooms. Based on the work of Douglas Fisher, close reading is a strategy for looking at text multiple times for multiple purposes leading to deeper meaning. In the primary classroom, this can be done through scaffolded read-alouds. Guiding children to go beyond the simple recall questions to analyzing the text for inferential meaning allows young readers to progress from what the text says to what the text means. Participants will learn how to create a close and scaffolded reading to use in their primary classroom.
