This Teaching & Learning professional learning opportunity will provide content, material, and strategies to assist educators in meeting the needs of students in their district.
Students need to read with the keenness and care that craftsmen put into their work. Carol Jago will demonstrate how to teach the craft of reading by helping students consider what particular texts are saying, to whom the text is addressed, and for whom the text is speaking. Crafty readers explore the workings of stories, articles, visual texts, video, and poems and in so doing better comprehend and are able to respond more fully to what they have read. Participants will garner ideas and learn protocols for fostering independence in readers -- without which we will never get to proficiency. Carol will demonstrate ways to provided scaffolding for reluctant readers and how to make assessment a natural part of the learning process. The session will also showcase book titles sure to pique students' interest. The educational need for a reading resurgence is clear. Too many young people consider literacy a school-based exercise rather than a life-long enterprise. Persuading them to think differently requires crafty teaching.
