CPI: Crisis Prevention Institute Training/ TBSI Module 7- Re-Certification



This 3 hour training course teaches units I through VII and Unit X of the Crisis Prevention Institute training program. Dress is casual. Participants are expected to meet both written and physical standards for certification. Please Note: This training fulfills the face to face requirements for Module 7 of the Texas Behavior Support Initiative (TBSI). Participants will be expected to participate in an annual follow-up training in this topic that will provide annual recertification in the CPI program.

There will be hands-on training, please come dressed in modest clothing that will allow you to move about easily such as loose-fitting sweat/yoga/gym pants and tennis shoes. 

Topics covered are as follows: 

Unit 1: The CPI crisis development model;

Unit 2: Nonverbal behavior;

Unit 3: Paraverbal communication;

Unit 4: Verbal intervention;

Unit 5: Precipitating factors, rational detachment, integrated experience;

Unit 6: Staff fear and anxiety;

Unit 7: CPI personal safety techniques;

Unit 10: Postvention.

This session is broken into three main sections; preventative techniques, Nonviolent Physical Crisis Intervention personal safety techniques and situational role plays and postvention. Participants will learn to identify the behavior levels that contribute to the development of a crisis and choose an appropriate staff intervention for each level. Identify useful nonverbal techniques which can help to prevent acting out behavior. Use verbal techniques to de-escalate behavior. Demonstrate CPI principles of personal safety to avoid injury if behavior escalates to a physical level. Provide for the Care, Welfare, Safety and Security of all those who are involved in a crisis situation. Recognize the importance of staff attitudes and professionalism in responding effectively to those in your charge.
