29 Pieces Education: Artists Making a Kinder World IS THIS MIRACLE ENOUGH? Lesson




This Teaching & Learning professional learning opportunity will provide content, material, and strategies to assist educators in meeting the needs of students in their district.


Important Session Information:


How do we traditionally think about miracles? This lesson asks participants to consider the miracles in front of them every day, giving them new eyes to see the world and its phenomena with wonder, awe, and respect.

There are three options provided for the art project: (1.) Making thaumatropes (two images back-to-back, when spun give the image of them superimposed, showing a “transformation”); (2.) making exploding books, when unfolded resembling a honeycomb or flower; (3.) taking a “one step hike,” focusing on one small area (a sidewalk crack, a birdbath, woodchips in a garden) and making a zine showing everything observed in a 1 square foot area. This lesson can cross over with knowledge objectives in biological sciences.

Format of lesson:
1:00 – 1:45 pm – Introductions and Lesson Presentation
1:45 – 2:00 pm - Break
2:00 – 3:10 pm - Art making
3:10 – 3:30 pm – Clean-up, conversation, sharing and questions

Audience: K-12 teachers, students and counselors. This lesson can be successfully completed in Art, Creative Writing, Biology, Physics, Science, and Advisory classes.

COST: FREE and lesson can be downloaded at no cost – in English or Spanish.

Supplies Needed for IS THIS MIRACLE ENOUGH? Project Lesson:
29 Pieces will bring a range of art supplies. If you’d like, bring any of your own favorite pens, markers, papers, crayons, etc. for your art. 

PRESENTER BIO:
Karen Blessen became the Founder and Executive Artistic Director of 29 Pieces after a long career as an artist and writer. 29 Pieces is a Dallas based organization which uses art to awaken, uplift and give voice to the creative human spirit.  Karen Blessen was the first graphic artist to be named as a winner of the Pulitzer Prize.
