Where the Sidewalk Ends: Extending Play Through Outdoor Classrooms

Anything that can be taught in an indoor classroom can be taught outdoors, often in ways that are more enjoyable for children.” Cathy James

Young children have different daily schedules now compared to the days we were all in pre-k. We played outside until the street lights came on or until someone called out our name. We loved riding bikes, skating, playing ball, swimming, and anything else under the sun.

Our bodies need the sun (and natural dirt) to help with vitamin levels, bone growth, and immunity. It is recommended that children have free play outside for an hour each day to think, create, problem solve, gain confidence and new skills through risky play--all while using their cognitive and gross motor skills.

What do you do when you bring your class outside? How many opportunities does your class have to interact with nature each day? What skills do you believe belong in the classroom versus outdoors?

In this session, we will look at these questions and have tons of hands-on learning time. We will show you how the outdoors will enhance your instruction, encourage integration, help with behavior problems, and promote healthy outdoor experiences for our children.
