Beyond Decoding: Building Comprehension Skills in K-2 Reader

Strong comprehension skills are the key to helping young readers move beyond simply decoding words to truly understanding and engaging with text. In this hands-on 3-hour workshop, K–2 teachers will explore practical strategies to build comprehension in early readers. Participants will learn to model thinking through think-alouds, ask meaningful questions, help students make connections, visualize text, and summarize ideas effectively. Through demonstration, guided practice, and collaborative planning, teachers will leave with ready-to-use lessons, anchor charts, and strategy ideas they can implement immediately in their classrooms. Whether teaching read-alouds, small groups, or independent reading, this session equips educators with the tools to help K–2 students become confident, thoughtful readers.
