Depth of Knowledge to Increase College Readiness
ELAR & Science Cross-Curricular Literacy

Advanced Academics includes courses, programs, assessments, services, and supports that provide opportunities for students to demonstrate college readiness. Applying depth of knowledge and cognitive rigor to classroom instruction will support deeper thinking and learning for students and yield improved college ready outcomes.

Important Session Information:

Depth of Knowledge (DoK) is a concept that considers the complexity and criteria in which students must understand and use their learning. All DoK levels play an important role in student learning, and this session will explore cross-curricular literacy strategies that range from students identifying information (DoK 1) to having students synthesize and compare ideas across multiple texts with a cross-curricular lens (DoK 4). Participants in this session will explore the discipline-specific strands of reading, writing, thinking, and communicating that are interwoven throughout academic subjects. Additionally, participants will evaluate the common ground in both English and Science STAAR and AP questions items. Whether approaching this session from the perspective of an English or science teacher, all participants will engage with strategies and processes to approach texts with a focus aligned to college-ready, cross-disciplinary skills.
