A Novel Idea: Planning for an Experience with Literature
Secondary ELAR Grades 6-12

Region 10 ELAR offerings promote integrated reading, writing, listening, speaking, and thinking for TEKS-based instruction utilizing authentic reading and reflective writing.

Important Session Information:

Teaching with novels, or whole books of any kind, often gets a bad rap: it takes too much time, students don't read or "fake" read, and instruction becomes too focused on just "teaching a book." Instead, we want books to create opportunities for learning that will transfer to all future reading experiences. Teaching with books can be a rich vehicle to address many integrated ELAR TEKS and help students build college readiness skills such as increased reading stamina, deeper critical thinking, and increased student independence. Participants in this session will explore and evaluate intentional instructional practices that target both reading and writing within a 3-4 week unit of a novel or nonfiction book. Participants should bring a book of choice with them as time will be provided to plan an experience with literature supported by collaboration from the presenter and other participants.
