Beyond the Label: Understanding Emotional Disability in Special Education Evaluations




This session will focus on evaluating the social, emotional, and behavioral needs of students within the Full and Individual Evaluation.

 

 


Important Session Information:


Emotional disability is one of the most complex and nuanced areas of special education evaluation, requiring careful consideration of diagnostic criteria, eligibility guidelines, and the impact of social-emotional functioning on learning. This full-day session will provide school psychologists and special education evaluators with a comprehensive framework for assessing emotional disability under IDEA, distinguishing it from social maladjustment, and differentiating it from other related eligibility categories. Participants will explore best practices for conducting thorough evaluations, including the use of standardized assessment tools, behavior rating scales, structured interviews, and observational methods. Case studies and practical applications will be incorporated to enhance participants’ ability to navigate challenging evaluations, collaborate effectively with teams, and ensure ethical, legally defensible decision-making.
