Breaking the Silence: Supporting Students with Selective Mutism




Sessions under this title will focus on collaboration between school’s psych’s and slps (selective mutism, autism, social skills, etc)

Important Session Information:


Selective Mutism is a unique disorder that may affect communication in some children in many ways. The underlying cause is believed to be a Social Anxiety Disorder that prevents children from communicating in certain settings. This course will explore ideas for the evaluation, treatment and management of children with SM and how to develop a multi-disciplinary approach to address it.  Learning Objectives:  As a result of this presentation the participant will be able to:  1. Describe the general principles of Selective Mutism  2) Explain formal and informal assessment measures  3) List resources available for parents, teachers and staff working with children who have Selective Mutism
