In this Zoom professional learning session, we will delve into the importance of using varied problems and contexts in mathematics instruction, particularly in addition and subtraction situations, as emphasized in Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI). CGI is an evidence-based approach that empowers students to develop their own problem-solving strategies by building on their intuitive understanding of mathematical concepts.
Participants will explore the progression of addition and subtraction problem types and how different mathematical contexts can deepen students' understanding and engagement. We will examine how presenting students with diverse problem structures, from simple to complex, encourages flexibility in thinking and supports the development of a robust mathematical foundation.
