Understanding Executive Functioning: What it is, how it manifests, and what to do about it.

Domain 4Mental and Behavioral Health Services and Interventions

School psychologists understand the biological, cultural, developmental, and social influences on mental and behavioral health, behavioral and emotional impacts on learning, and evidence-based strategies to promote social–emotional functioning. School psychologists, in collaboration with others, design, implement, and evaluate services that promote resilience and positive behavior, support socialization and adaptive skills, and enhance mental and behavioral health.

Important Session Information:

Guest Presenter: Amanda Gray Executive functioning is a hot topic and has been for years but we continue to struggle to understand what it is and the implications of deficits in executive functioning. This is only further complicated by a constantly evolving understanding of the significant variability in how executive dysfunction can present between individuals and across Special Education eligibilities. Therefore, this session reviews what executive functioning is, how difficulties can present, and strategies to compensate for deficits. Additionally, specific eligibilities will be discussed in terms of how executive dysfunction can be observed, especially high functioning individuals and girls with ADHD. Research, first-hand accounts, and anecdotal information will be reviewed and utilized to aid with increasing understanding of executive functioning and figuring out what to do about it.
