Disarming the Reading Wars K-3

If you teach elementary school in Texas, you have heard of the Texas Reading Academies, but do you understand the background and research that led to the passing of HB 3 which required the completion of the Reading Academies for ALL K-3 teachers?  The Reading Wars have been a topic of discussion among educators for decades, with opposing views on how children best learn to read. To deepen our understanding of this ongoing debate, this professional development session will provide participants with the opportunity to engage with different sources of information: the documentary film, The Right to Read, the podcast, Sold a Story, and professional articles.

Important Session Information:

**Please note, this learning experience is a virtual event and will not be hosted at a physical site.**

If you're an elementary school teacher in Texas, you're likely familiar with the Texas Reading Academies. But have you ever delved into the background and research that led to the passing of HB 3, which mandated completion of the Reading Academies for ALL K-3 teachers? This professional development session offers a chance to deepen your understanding of the "Reading Wars" - a long-standing debate among educators on the best approaches to teaching children to read.

Through this asynchronous course, you'll engage with a variety of information sources, including the documentary film The Right to Read, the podcast Sold a Story, and several professional articles. You'll have the opportunity to reflect on key themes that emerge from each source and explore best practices for teaching children to read. By the end of the course, you'll be equipped with a deeper understanding of the reasoning behind the Reading Academies and the ongoing debate around reading instruction.
