Assessment of students with significant disabilities is often a challenging task for evaluation personnel as norm referenced measures don’t go low enough or norm referenced measure don’t provide meaningful data to evaluators, school staff, or families. This session will provide training on two measures that offer completely different ways of measuring students’ abilities. The Leiter-3 offers a completely nonverbal measure of intelligence that is ideal for use with those who are cognitively delayed, non-English speaking, hearing impaired, speech impaired, or on the autism spectrum. Rather than focusing on deficits, the Leiter-3 provides meaningful information about cognitive abilities. The Developmental Assessment of students with Severe Handicaps-3rd Edition (DASH-3) is a criterion-referenced measure of specific skill levels in persons of all ages who have severe and/or multiple physical/sensory disabilities, including persons with severe and profound intellectual disability. The scales are also appropriate for individuals with mild to moderate disabilities; those who have single disabling conditions (e.g., individuals with visual impairment or paraplegia), and children who are functioning chronologically from birth to 6 years of age. This session will provide the participant with the background and uses of the Leiter-3 and DASH-3, as well as how to administer, score, and interpret both measures.
