29 Pieces Education: Artists Making a Kinder World
GREAT PEACEMAKERS Lesson: What Makes Us Great? What Makes Us a Peacemaker?




29 Pieces is a Dallas based organization which uses art to awaken, uplift and give voice to the creative human spirit. This workshop is open to all educators. Lessons demonstrated have been successfully completed in Art, Social Studies, Creating Writing, History, and Advisory classes.

**Please note, this learning experience is a virtual event and will not be hosted at a physical site.**

Karen Blessen, Founder and Director of 29 Pieces leads the Artists Making a Kinder World GREAT PEACEMAKERS Lesson. This lesson includes:

  1. Discussing the concept of non-violence.
  2. Defining ‘greatness’ and what makes someone a ‘peacemaker’.
  3. Creating a portrait of a Great Peacemaker out of found objects.
  4. Learning about the lives of ordinary people who became Great Peacemakers and identifying the significant contributions they made in history.
  5. Encouraging students to reflect on their power to make a difference by connecting the qualities of the Great Peacemaker with their own personal, positive character traits.
  6. Demonstrating how the Great Peacemakers modeled non-violent choices and identify ways that students can do the same to solve their own conflicts and problems.
  7. Learning about “making something from nothing”.

Format of lesson:

5:30 - 6:15 - Lesson Presentation

6:15 - 6:25 - Break

6:25 - 7:15 - Art making

7:15 - 7:30 - Conversation, sharing and questions

This session is free and lessons can be downloaded at no cost – in English or Spanish.

Supplies needed for GREAT PEACEMAKERS workshop:

*Background paper – can be cardstock, cardboard or foamcore, Found objects (one of the goals of this project is for students to ‘make something from nothing’ and spend no money on materials for this project), Scissors, String or ribbon, Markers, Glue sticks, Beads and other small decorative objects (optional), Colored papers, White glue, Colored pencils, Crayons

*(Paper size can vary according to what you have available.)

PRESENTER BIO:

Karen Blessen became the Founder and Executive Artistic Director of 29 Pieces after a long career as an artist and writer. 29 Pieces is a Dallas based organization which uses art to awaken, uplift and give voice to the creative human spirit. Through the 29 Pieces Education Program: Artists Making a Kinder World, 29 Pieces has worked with more than 650 teachers and more than 100,000 students in the North Texas area. Karen Blessen was the first graphic artist to be named as a winner of the Pulitzer Prize.
