Effective Teaching Practices in Secondary Mathematics
Module 1: Establish Mathematics Goals to Focus Learning

This Teaching & Learning professional learning opportunity will provide content, material, and strategies to assist educators in meeting the needs of students in their district.

Important Session Information:

This series of blended learning opportunities will provide teachers with an understanding of NCTM’s eight effective mathematics teaching practices, based in part upon NCTM’s Taking Action: Implementing Effective Mathematics Teaching Practices in Grades 6-8 and Taking Action: Implementing Effective Mathematics Teaching Practices in Grades 9-12. Throughout the sessions, participants will explore rich mathematical tasks, analyze narrative and video cases of classroom instruction, and analyze student work samples that highlight the practices. Discussions will focus on ways to implement the practices in light of our current educational situations.

From NCTM’s Principles to Action: Effective teaching of mathematics establishes clear goals for the mathematics that students are learning, situates goals within learning progressions, and uses the goals to guide instructional decisions. (p. 12)
