Strengths-based Approaches to 21st Century Transitions: Promoting Self-Determination and Student Involvement

This daylong session will examine strengths-based understandings of disability and how such approaches link to changes in the world of work in the 21st century. Themes of career construction and life design and their importance to all young people, including youth with disabilities, will be explored. The session will overview self-determination, examine its importance in 21st century transitions, and examine the role of student self-determined learning and student involvement. Participants will learn about evidence-based practices to promote self-determination, self-determined learning, career design and planning, and student involvement.

Presenter, Dr. Michael Wehmeyer

Michael L. Wehmeyer, Ph.D. is the Ross and Marianna Beach Distinguished Professor in Special Education and Chairperson, Department of Special Education as well as Director and Senior Scientist, at the Beach Center on Disability, all at the University of Kansas.

He is the author or co-author of over 450 peer-reviewed journal articles or book chapters and has authored/edited or co-authored/edited 43 books on issues pertaining to self-determination, positive psychology and disability, transition to adulthood, the education and inclusion of students with extensive support needs, and technology use by people with cognitive disabilities.
