Effective Teaching Practices in Secondary Mathematics
Best Practices in Planning (Grades 6-12)

This Teaching & Learning professional learning opportunity will provide content, material, and strategies to assist educators in meeting the needs of students in their district.

Important Session Information:

This 6-hour workshop will provide teachers with a deeper understanding of a subset of NCTM’s eight effective teaching practices, how they can be implemented in the classroom, and what can be gained from making them a part of one’s daily teaching practice. Through a variety of activities, teachers will explore a subset of the practices in more depth, focusing on the planning of and preparation for lessons. The material discussed in this session will be drawn from NCTM’s Taking Action: Implementing Effective Mathematics Teaching Practices in Grades 6-8 and Grades 9-12.

Participants will:

  • Learn what the eight effective mathematics practices are and understand how they support students’ learning
  • Explore four of the effective mathematics teaching practices (goals, tasks, conceptual understanding and questioning) in depth, focusing on planning and preparation for teaching
