Results of national testing tell us that American students haven’t gotten better at reading in 20 years, but what’s the reason for the stagnant scores? Have we been teaching reading all wrong? In order for students to improve their reading comprehension skills and build reading stamina, ALL students need to be exposed to complex texts. Accessing complex texts requires structured time for students to work through new strategies and practice skills. In this session, participants will understand the importance of daily shared reading in the intermediate and middle school grade levels and learn practical strategies for implementing a modified shared reading protocol to teach metacognitive skills so that students become successful independent readers capable of grappling with complex texts on their own. This session will meet at Rains ISD, Rains Jr. High; Room: Library.
All participants should to bring a device capable of internet access.
