Exploring Gender Differences in the Identification of Autism Spectrum Disorder
According to the most current data from the Center for Disease Control’s (CDC’s) Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring (ADDM), about 1 in 59 children has been identified with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), with a ratio of 4:1 males to females.  The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition (DSM-5) acknowledges potential Gender-related diagnostic issues’ in the autism spectrum disorder section, noting potentially subtler social and communication characteristics. This session will identify and explore emerging research regarding potential gender differences in the school-based identification of autism under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
