To help combat childhood obesity, Congress is now requiring any local educational agency, participating in the USDA school meals program to establish a local wellness policy. Congress recognizes that schools play a critical role in creating a healthy environment for the prevention of childhood obesity. Creating a healthy environment helps combat problems associated with poor nutrition and physical activity. The law places the responsibility of developing a wellness policy at the local level so the individual needs of each school district can be addressed.
