Ensuring students have an opportunity to reason mathematically is one of the most difficult challenges teachers face. A key component in leading students to rich mathematical understandings is creating a classroom environment that encourages meaningful student-to-student discourse. This session provides teachers with concrete guidance based on five key practices that any teacher can use for engaging students in discussions that make mathematics in classroom more meaningful and transparent for all learners. In using these five practices, teachers will learn more effective ways to promote classroom discourse amongst students.
