A PLAN FOR SUCCESS: MERGING LITERACY AND SELF-REGULATION TO INCREASE ACHIEVEMENT Special Education Teacher and Administrators (Grade 7th -12th)
All kids want to learn. Some students may be more challenged in the learning process. Specifically, struggling readers’ experiences with literacy tasks are often mired in negative experiences and have “given up”. Learning contexts that nurture student growth mindset lead to significant growth in literacy skill development and content knowledge acquisition.
Teachers and administrators will:
• learn how to incorporate the paired self- regulatory model and strategic reading instruction and how it aligns with adolescent brain development
• explore classroom examples for the development and integration of differentiated literacy instructional strategies within in content specific classes
• explore research-based, classroom- tested strategies for engaging students in rigorous texts through content study
• gain familiarity with adaptable center strategies for literacy skill development
• prepare to use Literacy & Learning Centers and achieve academic gains
• earn how to adapt textbooks, web-based texts, and articles for different student reading levels with simple, easy-to-use strategies
• learn how to develop a classroom environment that supports reading for learning
