Diversity in Development and Learning
Low Income Economic Marginalization

Understanding and respect for diversity in development and learning, and advocacy for social justice, are foundations for all aspects of service delivery. Examples of professional practices include:

Addressing individual differences, strengths, backgrounds, and needs in the design, implementation, and evaluation of all services.
Using a problem-solving framework for addressing the needs of English language learners.  Promoting fairness and social justice in school policies and programs

Important Session Information:

Low Income Economic Marginalization, or LIEM, is a broader conceptualization of poverty that incorporates many aspects of what it means to be economically oppressed, including access to limited financial resources and marginalization related to social class. This framework allows for a broader understanding than a poverty/affluence model in our thinking about the needs of our students.

In this session, participants will:

  • Understand the concept of LIEM, including an operational definition, demographic statistics, and a rationale for why it is necessary for LSSPs to study this multidimensional social phenomenon.
  • Develop skills for understanding the impact of LIEM on students as a major factor in academic achievement.
  • Determine how to use social justice principles to advocate for students impacted by LIEM.

This session is for Irving ISD staff only
