Fine Arts
What Works for Us High School Band Series, Part II

This Teaching & Learning professional learning opportunity will provide content, material, and strategies to assist educators in meeting the needs of students in their district.

Important Session Information:

January 2020 marked the kick off of a new series for Professional learning for the band directors in Region 10.  In our first session, John Alstrin, Director of Fine Arts for Prosper ISD, and Gerry Miller, Director of Instrumental Music for Coppell ISD, collaborated on a two-part clinic focused on fundamentals and rehearsal techniques to help middle school and high school bands launch in to the spring semester.   The session was well attended and the feedback that we received was so positive that the directors have agreed to set up a follow up session for May 2020.  Our May 29th clinics will run from 10 am to noon at the Prosper HS Band Hall and Percussion room and will focus on the following topics:

10 – noon

"Setting the High School Percussionist up for Summer Success" - In this session, Mike Huestis, Director of Percussion at Prosper HS and the Prosper HS drumline will demonstrate exercises, techniques, and practice methods that they will individually employ over the summer so that they are physically, mentally, and musically prepared for August band camp and getting the most out of their summer practice time.  This clinic is geared towards high school percussion teachers, private lesson teachers, students, and band directors.

10 - noon

"Setting the High School Marching Band up for Summer Success" -   In this session, Brandon Holt, Director of Bands at Prosper HS, Spencer Smith, Associate Director at PHS, and Aaron Renzenbrink, Associate Director at PHS and staff member of the Bluecoats Drum and Bugle Corps, and a HS demonstration group will give a two-hour overview of how they approach the introduction and development of beginning, moderate, and advanced fundamentals for the marching arts.  Prosper HS was a 2019 Bands of America Grand Nationals Finalist and placed 14th at the UIL 6A State Marching Band Contest.

Presenters: John Alstrin and Gerry Miller
