Skilled authors use tools and techniques to craft their masterpieces. If we want students to be better writers, then we must teach them the "art" of writing by exposing them to a variety of author's craft moves and providing time for them to analyze and experiment with those different types of craft, and learn strategies for using art and the reading/writing connection to teach the art of writing.
