Controversial Topics in Social Studies

This Teaching & Learning professional learning opportunity will provide content, material, and strategies to assist educators in meeting the needs of students in their district.

Important Session Information:

How do we create civically minded students in a world that seems to be increasingly divided? Understanding the past and the lessons that can be learned from it are an integral part of our role as Social Studies teachers, but it can be uncomfortable to address topics like racism, hate speech, anti semitism, protests, and minority rights. We can't ignore these conversations but rather need to create environments in our classrooms where students are not only encouraged to discuss but are also explicitly taught to engage in appropriate civic discourse. Join us as we share our reflections, create an action plan on how to facilitate such difficult conversations and develop strategies that encourage critical thinking and civic responsibility.

(Region 10 Regional Cooperative Service (RCS) members receive free registration discounts and will be reflected at check out.)
