Selecting Nonfiction Students Will Devour

This Teaching & Learning professional learning opportunity will provide content, material, and strategies to assist educators in meeting the needs of students in their district.

Important Session Information:

With the combined experiences of a literacy coach and a 2018 Sibert Award committee member, Lex Anne Seifert, MLS and Debra Marshall, MLS, will inspire you to think more critically about nonfiction for today's readers. The first component of the session will review the work of Kylene Beers, Reading Nonfiction. Attendees will redefine nonfiction with academic language appropriate for the elementary, middle, and high school students. Strategies for reading nonfiction text will comprise the second portion of the session. Finally, Debra will not only review the best of 2017 books that were considered by the Sibert Committee as well as the newest books published in 2018, but she will also explain the criteria for selecting a Sibert Award book. Walk away with a list of new books to order this fall that the students are sure to READ and armed with the information you need to select the best nonfiction books for your students.
