Important Breakout Information: A key component of skilled reading is language comprehension. When teaching foundational skills of word recognition, it is important to support language comprehension competencies through interactive read-alouds, shared readings and shared experiences. In this session, participants will explore a variety of routines that focus on developing background knowledge and vocabulary in order to build language comprehension in our young readers.

Important Breakout Information: There is an art, an act of creation and imagination, to crafting questions, and participants in this session will increase their questioning craft by developing skills for more intentional teacher-scripted questions and exploring strategies to promote student-generated questions and reflections. The use of STAAR and EOC stems will be incorporated into session content to illustrate how questioning specifically frames student expectations in both reading and writing.
